Boomers Pursue Executive MBAs

The educational process is certainly an ongoing one, especially as more Baby Boomers are entering executive MBA programs. According to Michael Desiderio, executive director of the Executive MBA Council, an Orange, California-based association supporting executive MBA programs, it's not a surprisingly trend, considering the popularity of these offerings today. The organization's website features a searchable function of their member schools—a sampling of the many executive MBA programs available in the U.S today.
Meeting the Challenge
Going to grad school, especially after putting in a hard day at the office, can be a challenge. So, just what is the draw, especially for boomers already experienced in their field? Desiderio says that it's the camaraderie and the chance to exchange ideas with other industry experts is what keeps them coming back. He adds, “With executive MBA programs, part of the value is not just from the teachers in front of you, but from the people sitting next to you as well. We're talking about smart individuals who are doing well in their career, and they are simply looking to take it to another level. An executive MBA program forces you to think differently. Suddenly, you can see problems through a different lens.”
Do Your Homework
While top level execs are certainly drawn to well-known schools and the better known MBA programs, it's important to find the right fit for your professional needs. Finding a program for you means doing a little research. A number of publications, including BusinessWeek and the Financial Times, offer issues devoted to rankings of executive MBA programs in the U.S. and abroad. While some programs offer specializations in marketing or accounting, for instance, other executive MBA programs are focused on an international perspective, international travel exchange, or a more well-rounded approach offered in a general management curriculum, notes Desiderio.
Joan Coonrod, Director of EMBA Admissions at Emory University's Goizueta School of Business, says boomers are looking to these programs to expand and enhance their careers. She notes, “Executive MBA programs give you more options, especially considering globalization and corporate reorganizations. You become a much better problem solver, and the degree gives you the tools needed for the rest of your career.”
